ANCESTOR SPOTLIGHT: ROBERT STERLING NESBITT

Robert Sterling Nesbitt was born Aug 27, 1816 in Dickson, Tennessee and died Dec 29, 1894 in Dickson, Tennessee.

Robert was the 2nd great grandfather of Greg Nesbitt.

Robert was a farmer.

Robert married Martha E Ragan on March 16, 1839 and they had 16 children: William, Mary, Nellie, Mary, Elizabeth, Wilson, John, Hardy, Orville, Sarah, FM, Newton, Hardy, Melvin, Floella, & Henry.

Robert Sterling Nesbitt lived in one of the states of the Confederacy in 1863 when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Given that his father, Jeremiah, was a slave owner, this probably affected their family.

The picture below is the house that Robert Sterling Nesbitt built in 1865 after the Yankees burned the original home down and poured sorghum down their well. His grandson lives there in this photo.

Robert is buried at Adams-Nesbitt Cemetery in Dickson, Tennessee.
